Azerbaijani Representative Re-Elected Member of European Committee against Torture

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. E.Huseynov / Latif Huseynov was re-elected as a member of the European Committee against Torture, Arif Mammadov, head of the permanent representative of Azerbaijan to the EU said by telephone from Strasburg on 26 September.

Huseynov's candidature was considered by the representatives of the Ministers Committee of the EU. Earlier the government has submitted the list including the names of three candidates to the Ministers Committee.

In compliance with the Charter of the European Committee any representative may be elected two times for a four-year term. A total of ten independent experts are elected. They are elected by member-countries of the European Convention against Torture or Humiliation of Dignity or Punishment.

The issues concerning memberships of Belgium, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, and the Ukraine were discussed at the meeting.

The European Committee was established in compliance with the European Convention against Torture in Strasburg on 26 November 1987.

Azerbaijan joined the Convention after becoming a full member of the Council of Europe in 2001.
