ANTALYA, Türkiye, April 12. Zangezur Corridor will be a good opportunity for Armenia to come out of the economic isolation, said Elchin Amirbayov, Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Special Assignments, as he addressed the 4th Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Trend reports.
According to Amirbayov, this project offers Armenia a unique opportunity. "The Zangezur Corridor presents a good chance for Armenia, which is currently in complete economic isolation, to reintegrate into the region," he said. By becoming part of this critical infrastructure project, Armenia could not only benefit economically but also contribute to the region's strategic importance.
Speaking at the panel "Organisation of Turkic States: A Unique Cooperation Model", Amirbayov emphasized the vital role the Turkic world plays in global connectivity due to its strategic location between East and West.
"The Turkic world, with its critical geostrategic position, is already considered a global connectivity hub," he said. The official stressed that improving infrastructure within the region would not only boost its resilience but also enhance the geoeconomic and geopolitical significance of the countries involved.
Azerbaijan, according to Amirbayov, has already capitalized on its geographical and economic position. "Azerbaijan, benefiting from its geoeconomic and geographical location, its strategic autonomy, and existing critical infrastructure, is playing a pivotal role in the East-West connection," he explained.
One of the key infrastructure projects that is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity is the Middle Corridor. Amirbayov pointed out that Azerbaijan, along with its partners in Central Asia and Türkiye, is already operating the Middle Corridor, a crucial route connecting East Asia with Western Europe.
While the Middle Corridor is operational, Amirbayov believes its capacity can be greatly enhanced by the implementation of the Zangezur Corridor, a 43-kilometer-long railway that still requires construction. "The Zangezur Corridor could be a real game-changer in the region," he said. "It would significantly increase the transmission capacity of the Middle Corridor to 10 to 12 million tons per year".
