The European Union will demand from Turkey to open frontiers with Armenia and “improvement of conditions” towards the national minorities, a member of the “Greens” fraction of the European Parliament Djem Osdemir said in a statement, commenting on the position of the European Parliament on the start of negotiations on the Turkey’s entry to the European Union and adopting the Supplementary Protocol on Ankara, Trend reports citing the Turkish media.

Ozdemir noted, the issue will be debated on 28 September 2005 and the clause will be included into the text of the Protocol, under which “Ankara needs to take a decision on opening frontiers with Armenia”.

The parliamentarian added, the fraction of the Christian Democrats seeks to
include the issue of recognition by Turkey of the so-called “Armenian genocide” in the draft document for the purpose of which holding actions in front of the European Parliament building is possible.

Touching upon the results of the conference held in Brussels under the title “Has Turkey changed?” Ozdemir reported, during the event the idea was underlined according to which the European Union is the alliance of the Christian states and cannot incorporate the Moslem Turkey.

The Italian parliamentarian Fransisco Enrico Speroni stated addressing the conference, “nothing changed in Turkey and accepting it in the European Union would be a historical mistake”.
