Georgian Ombudsman Requests to Information on Georgian Church

Georgia, Tbilisi / Trend corr. N.Kirtskhalia / The Georgian Ombudsman sent a letter to the Azerbaijani ombudswoman, Elmira Suleymanova, to request information about the closure of the Georgian Church in the village of Kurmukhi in the region of Gakh in Azerbaijan.

The letter stated that the municipal of Nekresski and Kherski Sergey confirmed the information about the closure of the church.

The Georgian ombudsman said that if the information is confirmed it would be a violation of religious freedom.

"I appeal to you in article nine of the European Commission which will be violated by the closure of the Church, moreover, we have long-term relations between our nations and institutions," stated the letter.

"I believe in long-term friendship and relations between our nations which should be able to resist such incidents. Furthermore, current relations will be better based on additional friendship and neighbourhood ties between both countries," the Georgian ombudsman said.
