UN to Assist Azerbaijan in AIDS Combating(video)

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr S. Agayeva / Azerbaijan will be included into the list of the countries receiving assistance from the UN in fighting against AIDS. The decision was made by Nafiz Sadik, the UN Secretary General's Special Representative on HIV and AIDS for Asian and Pacific Countries, after she get informed of the AIDS incidence in Azerbaijan.

The situation with AIDS in Azerbaijan causes concern, Sadik said at a briefing in Baku on 15 December. The issue was discussed at the meeting with the President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva.

"We considered the opportunities for new approaches to fighting against AIDS. The UN may render assistance to Azerbaijan in this field through educating the population and technical support," Sadik said.

According to official statistics, over 300 HIV contamination facts were registered in Azerbaijan in 2007. For the time being, there are over 1,200 HIV carriers officially registered in the country. Since 1987, the disease killed 192 (official statistics).
