Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva, the initiator of the International Dialogue for Environmental Action (IDEA) has been awarded with the Special International Honorary Award for Environmental Protection.

The sixth International Environmental Olympiad among pupils was held in Baku on April 6-7. It was organized jointly by the Education Ministry, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan, Cag Ogretim company, İnepo-Avrasiya environmental public association and under Public Television and Radio Company's informational support, IDEA said.

The purpose of the Olympiad was to inform the younger generation about resolving of environmental issues and environmental protection, to form a responsive attitude to the environment among school children and to develop their ecological thinking, to inculcate the awareness of the need to protect the material, cultural, historical, social and aesthetic values, to attract them to a variety of projects on environmental issues.

The International Environmental Project Olympiad was held for the first time in 2007 with the participation of pupils from 17 world countries. Later it became a tradition. About 400 school children from 42 countries have been qualified for the Olympics this year.

The jury has assessed 130 of 350 projects submitted to the Olympiad from foreign countries, and 60 of 294 projects submitted from Azerbaijan.

Such countries as Afghanistan, Albania, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Vietnam, Yemen, Somalia, Angola, Great Britain, Bulgaria, Zambia, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Russia, Egypt, Mongolia, Mozambique, the Czech Republic, Belgium and Azerbaijan have been represented at the Olympiad this year.

Azerbaijan has won 4 gold, 12 silver and 17 bronze medals in the Olympiad.

According to the Olympiad organizers and the jury, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the founder of the International Dialogue for Environmental Action "(IDEA) Leyla Aliyeva has been awarded with the Special International Honorary Award for Environmental Protection this year at the initiative of the Olympiad winners.
