Azerbaijani wrestlers become European champions by defeating their Armenian opponents

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 17. The European Under-17 Wrestling Championship continues in the capital of Albania, Tirana, Trend reports citing Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation.

On the fifth day of the competition, freestyle wrestlers in the weight categories of 48, 55, 65, 80 and 110 kg took to the carpet.

Bashir Verdiev (48 kg), who entered the fight from the 1/4 finals, missed the victory in the last seconds. The Azerbaijani wrestler lost to the Georgian Gegi Oniani (3:3).

Another Azerbaijani wrestler Haji Karimov (55 kg) defeated Haji Zade from Türkiye in the 1/8 finals - 10:0. In the 1/4 finals, he defeated Russian Ibrahimhaji Magomedov - 12:10. In the semi-finals, Karimov defeated the Frenchman Ubayda Itaev (12:0) and reached the finals. In the decisive match, Haji met with the Armenian Samvel Gevorgyan. Karimov, who took the initiative from the very beginning of the fight, won with a full advantage (13:0) and became the European champion.

Mirzaaga Akhundov (65 kg) defeated the Swiss Aaron Zberg with a score of 11:0 in the debut, and in the 1/8 finals he did not defeat the representative of Türkiye Ramzi Temur - 0:12. As the opponent (Ramzi Temur) reached the final, Akhundov got the right to participate in the repechage bout for bronze. The Azerbaijani wrestler in the fight for the bronze left no chance to the Belarusian Alexander Kambaev (12:2) and took the bronze of the European Championship.

Sheikhali Babazade (80 kg) lost at the start to the Pole Bartlomie Nowakowski - 4:9.

Another representative of Azerbaijan, Yusif Dursunov (110 kg), who started his performance from the 1/4 finals, defeated Yaraslav Kokhan from Belarus. The graduate of the Agstafa wrestling school won ahead of schedule in the semi-final of the Turk Ardu Guler (11:0) and reached the final of the European Championship for the second time. Dursunov's opponent in the final was Henrik Haykyan from Armenia. He defeated his opponent and retained the title of European champion.
