Azerbaijan to build domestic waste sorting and transfer stations

Balakhani LTD Llc. will construct a domestic waste sorting and transfer stations in Azerbaijan under the construction of household waste incineration plant, Tamiz Shahar JSC Board Chairman Zakir Ibrahimov said.

"The construction of the plant is continuing in accordance with schedule and the plant will be set up late 2012 [formerly it was planned to commission in September]. Under the pilot project for the semi-sorting, the construction of the first sorting point with of capacity of 200,000 tons per year is underway," Ibrahomiv said.

According to Ibrahimov, a feasibility study and other technical documentation are under development and the project will be valued on this basis.

"The pilot station will not cover the entire volume of debris, and therefore the number of these stations will be increased in the future. The project stipulates the construction of refueling stations," he said.

Currently, the domestic waste at the Balakhani polygon is collected manually.

The plant is constructed on an area of 20 hectares not far from Balakhani polygon with a capacity of 500,000 tons of solid waste management per year. The plant is able to accept medical waste incineration in quantities up to 10,000 tons per year. The plant will use 231.5 million KW per hour of electricity per year for waste incineration. The plant will be commissioned in September 2012.

All technical issues concerning electric power transmission and issues related to tariffs will be discussed before putting the plant into operation.

The cost of the project is estimated at 346 million euro for 36 months.

Waste incinerators will have two lines each with a capacity of 250,000 tons and a power generation turbine. According to the project, the plant's power can be increased to 250,000 tons in the future. Precipitation ash may be used for the road construction.

So far, 80 percent of all household waste generated in Baku and Absheron was sent to Balakhani polugon for open dumping.

The French company CNIM is the contractor of the project. The plant will be built within three years plus two years - the period of identifying defects and the next 20 years - the term of the operation CNIM.

The founder of the Balakhani LTD Llc. is CNIM Azerbaijan LTD. The organization was registered Nov.3, 2009. The official groundbreaking ceremony for the new plant was held on the same day.

Fuad Musayev is the company's official representative. The company is registered with an authorized capital 1,000 manat. Members of the Supervisory Board were Berta André Augusta Julies and Dmitrieff Nicholas.
