Iran's import-dependency ratio jumps by 75 percent

Iran 's import-dependency ratio increased from 35 percent to 75 percent during the past five years, MNA reported quoting Parliamentary Research Center head Ahmad Tavakoli as saying.

Tavakoli said excessive agricultural import endangers public health. He said food safety should be considered by the government.

"The import of cereal increased from 4.4 million tons to 6.2 million tons during the past five years, while the wheat import over last year (ended on March20,2011) increased by 7 times to 764,000 tons ," he said.

The fruit import increased to one million tons.
