Freight traffic volume up in Azerbaijan

About 67.9 million tons of cargo were transported in Azerbaijan in January-April 2017 that is by 2.8 percent more than in the same period of 2016, says a report of the country’s State Statistics Committee.

The volume of non-oil freight traffic rose by 5.2 percent during the year and was 49.8 million tons.

About 87.6 percent of total freight traffic volume accounted for the private sector in January-April 2017.

Some 59.6 percent of the total cargo was transported by motor vehicles, 29.1 percent – by pipelines, 7.5 percent – by trains, 3.7 percent – by ships and 0.1 percent – by planes.

Meanwhile, 610.3 million passengers were transported in January-April 2017 that is by 2.5 percent more than in the same period of 2016. Some 87.3 percent of passengers were transported by motor vehicles, 12.4 percent by subway and the remaining part – by other types of transport.

Nearly 5.1 million tons of cargo was transported via railway in January-April 2017 that is by 10.9 percent more than in the same period of 2016.

On average, the daily number of loaded railcars was 363, while the number of unloaded railcars was 423.

Some 2.53 million tons of cargo were transported by ships in January-April 2017 that is by 52.6 percent more than in the same period of 2016. Some 48.4 percent of the transported cargo accounted for oil cargo.

According to the report, 40.5 million tons of cargo was transported by motor vehicles in January-April 2017 that is by 2.3 percent more than in the same period of 2016.

Some 532.9 million people were transported by motor vehicles in January-April 2017 (an increase by 1.9 percent as compared to January-April 2016); 96.2 percent of these passengers were transported by buses and 3.8 percent – by cars.

Some 76 million people were transported by subway in January-April 2017 that is by 5.8 percent more than in the same period of 2016.

Moreover, some 607,500 passengers were transported by planes in January-April 2017 that is by 27.9 percent more than in the 1Q16. Nearly 0.1 percent of air traffic accounted for private sector during the period.
