Russia, Turkmenistan to cooperate in security and economy

Members of Russia’s Council of the Federation Committee on Foreign Affairs supported the ratification of the Strategic Partnership Agreement between Russia and Turkmenistan, previously approved by the Chamber of Regions, according to Turkmenistan’s Parliamentary Newspaper.

The corresponding decision has been recently made at the meeting of the committee.

"Turkmenistan is our important global partner and I am sure that this agreement will become an important element in the development of our bilateral relations," Parliamentary Newspaper quoted Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the Council of the Federation Committee on Foreign Affairs, as saying.

The strategic partnership agreement between Turkmenistan and Russia was signed in Ashgabat on October 2, 2017.

According to the agreement, the strategic partnership of Turkmenistan and Russia is aimed at expanding cooperation in the political, economic and humanitarian spheres, creating favorable conditions for ensuring mutual security, countering global threats and challenges, as well as strengthening regional stability.

Turkmenistan and Russia expand and intensify cooperation in the fight against terrorism and other forms of extremism, various forms of transnational organized crime, corruption, illicit traffic in narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors, weapons, smuggling and illicit export of cultural property, other forms of new threats and security challenges.

According to the agreement, Russia and Turkmenistan ensure protection for the ethnic, linguistic, cultural and religious identity of ethnic groups residing on their territories.

The countries also create conditions for the preservation and development of this identity, the effective participation of these individuals in cultural, social and economic life.

Russia holds a leading position in the ranking of the biggest foreign trade partners of Turkmenistan. Turkmenistan has recently intensified cooperation at the regional level with Russia’s Tatarstan Republic, St. Petersburg city, Astrakhan, Sverdlovsk regions.

More than 190 enterprises with Russian capital implementing more than 240 investment projects have been registered in the Turkmen market. Among the traditional partners are KAMAZ company, ARETI International Group, Siberia Airlines.
