Presentation of a project on the use of electric motorcycles by electricity employees was held in Tehran, Trend reports referring to the Iranian Energy Ministry’s website.
Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian participated in the presentation of the project.
Speaking at the presentation, Ardakanian said that 3,000 motorcycles will be handed over to electricity employees in Tehran by the end of this Iranian year (March 21, 2020).
The minister added that the Energy Ministry will start implementation of the motorcycle electrification project at its offices. At the next stage, the project will be implemented in the ministries using motorcycles for services, Ardakanian said.
The minister noted that there are about 10 million old motorcycles in Iran, adding that efforts are being made to switch these motorcycles to electric engines.
The Iranian minister said that electric motorcycles are of great importance both economically and environmentally.
“Gasoline saved by the use of electric motorcycles will be exported,” the minister noted.
Ardakanian added that electricity companies in Iran will take steps to create electric motorcycle charging stations and that not only government agencies but also citizens will be able to benefit from this project.
“It will be possible to save 50 million rials (about $1,190) per vehicle on fuel annually,” the minister said.
The Iranian minister added that discussions are being held on the purchase of electric motorcycles (by government agencies and citizens), and it is expected that a loan for this purpose will be provided next year.
There are about 12 million motorcycles in Iran, and about 2.5 million of them are in Tehran. The Iranian government is considering a series of projects to reduce air pollution in Tehran and other major cities.
