Retail chains in Azerbaijan are focusing on online sales through mobile applications, Chairman of the Retail Chains Public Association Samir Abdullayev told Trend.

Abdullayev said that the coronavirus pandemic is a big test for the Azerbaijani economy.

“The application of the special quarantine regime had a great impact on various sectors of the economy, as well as on the operating hours of retail chains. Numerous workers in this sector, risking to be infected with the virus, provided and provide the country's population with food,” the chairman emphasized.

“The quarantine regime taught all participants in the market of grocery retail chains to approach the issues of hygiene and sanitary safety more carefully, as well as to change some business processes related to the organization of sales and display of food products. Some tools for organizing food sales have changed," he noted.

“Moreover, the coronavirus has had a great impact on the operation of shopping and entertainment centers. The activity of the shopping and entertainment centers was completely suspended and all projects related to the construction of the centers were also completely or partially suspended,” added Abdullayev.

By the initiative and support of the Small and Medium Business Development Agency of Azerbaijan, Retail Chains Public Association was established on July 25, 2020.

The new organization was created to support the development of a market economy, as well as to promote and implement initiatives, coordinate and expand cooperation between entrepreneurs, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) involved in production and trade.
