EU provides more details on projects supporting in Georgian energy sector

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 21

EBRD and KfW implemented Program for Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings in Georgia as part of the joint EU-IFI initiative for scaling up energy efficiency in buildings in Eastern Partnership countries, the EU delegation in Georgia told Trend.

EU delegation in Georgia has provided details on projects supporting in Georgian energy sector:

- EU grant contribution 25 million euros, total of 132.8 million euros for energy efficiency rehabilitation of up to 500 public schools. Preparations are being finalized, expected to launch in 1Q2021. Besides bringing benefits of improved, healthier studying environment and reduced emissions and costs, the program with help with implementation of newly established GE national energy efficiency framework based on EU legislation and experience.

- Enguri Hydro Power Plant Rehabilitation Project: Climate Resilience Upgrade, the 4th phase of rehabilitation of the Enguri and Vardnili hydro power plants with 7.3 million euros grant. Expected to increase output potential and resilience of the biggest HPP in Georgia, supported by hydro- and meteorology assistance. The major repairs are about to start.

- Extension of the Georgian Transmission Network, a 225 million euros project implemented with KfW in the lead; EU contribution 10.4 million euros. The project aims to enhance electric grid infrastructure for integration of new hydropower plants, increase of electricity transmission capacities, including cross-border trade, and improvement of security of energy supply in Georgia.
