Turkmenistan plans to sow potatoes and other vegetable and gourd crops across the country on 106,000 hectares of land for 2022, Trend reports citing Business Turkmenistan portal.

From those lands, some 65,000 hectares will be set aside for spring sowing, with the remaining 41,000 hectares put aside for autumn sowing.

The country intends to plant 30,000 hectares of potatoes and 10,000 hectares of onions this February.

Back in December 2021, the government of Turkmenistan planned to increase land for sowing potatoes, vegetables, and melons by reducing cotton sown areas from 620,000 hectares to 580,000 hectares.

Agriculture is one of Turkmenistan's most important economic sectors. Wheat, cotton, rice, sugar beets, fodder, vegetables, melons, fruit, and berry crops are the main types of agricultural crops grown in the country.

Turkmenistan is using foreign equipment in its agricultural sector, and in particular, the equipment provided by US companies such as John Deere Walldorf GmbH & Co.KG and Claas.

The state provides targeted support for the development of the agricultural sector in Turkmenistan. In particular, the entire production infrastructure of the agro-industrial sector is being re-equipped and modernized, the chemical industry is developing, and modern tractors, combines, and other equipments are being purchased.
