Switzerland to assist Azerbaijan in entrance to WTO Minister for Economic Development

The Swiss government has stated on its readiness to render assistance to Azerbaijan in entrance to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Heydar Babayev, the Minister for Economic Development, told Trend.

Azerbaijan processed the issue during the visit to Zurich in mid-March 2006 for participation in a meeting of the Azerbaijani-Swiss intergovernmental commission. Switzerland will render comprehensive assistance in preparations for entrance to the WTO, Babayev noted.

A negotiating group has left for Geneva on 29 March to participate in the next round of talks on Azerbaijans entrance to the organization

During the forthcoming meetings it is planned to hold bilateral talks with the representatives of the United States, Canada and the European Union, to mull proposals on services and trade. The State Commission also designed rely proposals for WTO member-states who desire to have more liberal terms for access to the Azerbaijani market of goods and services.

Over 9 years the country has been conducting preparations for entrance to the WTO, while only last year a decisive stage came the sides set up bilateral talks. The government set two major tasks: strengthening of measures on improvement of legislation and intensification of the bilateral talks.
