The Caspian Sea is an extraordinary important region to increase energy security of Europe, US Special Envoy on Energy in the Eurasian region Richard Morningstar said at the 16th Caspian international oil and gas conference in Baku on June 3.

"The Caspian region will play an important role for a long time," Morningstar said.

The special envoy said the conflict between Russia and Georgia, as well as between Russia and Ukraine which caused the gas crisis made Europe vulnerable from an energy point of view.

Morningstar said the United States continues to support the Nabucco and ITGI (Turkey-Greece-Italy) gas pipeline projects.

"Europe must build the unified energy market," Morningstar said.

He also noted the necessity to continue cooperation with Russia in energy field.

Morningstar said the global financial recession led to fall in the world demand in energy resources, but it is expected to be restored in long-term perspective. The global economic recession opened new opportunities for countries' cooperation, Morningstar said.
