TAP offers best method of delivering Azerbaijani gas to Europe: project’s official

Azerbaijan , Baku, Oct. 3 / Trend , A.Badalova /

Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) project offers the best method of delivering Caspian gas to European markets, TAP's official told Trend on Monday.

"We are convinced that TAP is the only project that can truly deliver a sound and sustainable solution against each one of the 8 criteria that the Shah Deniz Consortium has set out", - Lisa Givert, Head of Communications at TAP Project said.

Last week TAP submitted their proposal to transport 10 billion cubic metres of gas a year from the Shah Deniz II field in Azerbaijan to the energy markets of Europe.

"By opening up the Southern Gas Corridor, TAP would help bring the new sources of gas from the Caspian region that will ensure Europe's security of supply," TAP's report said.

According to the report, TAP and its shareholders remain fully committed to the Southern Gas Corridor and have submitted a robust bid.

"It is the shortest and most financially viable of the proposed options. It is scalable and provides an efficient and cost-effective means of realising the increasing volumes of gas from the Caspian - and further afield - as they become available," the report said.

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline is a natural gas pipeline project. The pipeline will transport gas from the Caspian region via Greece and Albania and across the Adriatic Sea to southern Italy and further into Western Europe. The project is aimed at enhancing security of supply as well as diversification of gas supplies for the European markets.

The total length of the pipeline is about 800 kilometers. The initial pipeline capacity will be 10 billion cubic meters per year which is tailor made to the 10bcm from Shah Deniz II.

The gas produced within the second phase of the Azerbaijani Shah Deniz Field is considered to be the main gas source for TAP project.

The Shah Deniz-2 consortium will review proposals submitted by the participants of pipeline projects of the Southern Gas Corridor, in accordance with previously announced criteria, including commercial attractiveness, ability for project realization from the technical and financial point of view, engineering and design work, management, coordination and transparency, the possibility of a phased scale-up and other criteria.
