Turkmenistan and the European Union have expressed interest in creating a new international legal mechanism for ensuring reliable and stable supply of energy resources, said the message from Turkmen government.
Ashgabat hosted the meeting of Turkmenistan's Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov with Vice-President of the European Commission Maros Sefcovic who is on a working visit to the country, according to the message.
During the meeting, the sides discussed the international initiatives of Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov aimed at creating a new international legal mechanism for ensuring reliable and stable supply of energy resources, said the government message.
In this context, the sides expressed mutual interest in the development of bilateral relations between Turkmenistan and EU.
Moreover, the regional and international issues were discussed during the meeting. "The meeting focused on discussing the energy security issues," said the message.
As one of the key players in the energy market of Central Asia and Caspian Sea region, Turkmenistan puts forward a number of initiatives to ensure reliable and stable supply of energy resources to the world market within the UN.
Turkmenistan produces around 70-80 billion cubic meters of gas per year. It has been continuously supplying the raw material to Russia and Iran. The route for exporting Turkmen gas to China was opened in 2009.
Turkmenistan ranks fourth in the world for the volume of gas reserve and is seeking new sales markets in Europe as well. Export of Turkmen gas through the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan and Turkey is considered the best route for getting access to the European continent.
