Iran's gas export to Iraq may be extended - minister

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 13. An agreement was reached between the two sides on the extension of Iran's gas export to Iraq for a period of 5 years, Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji told reporters, Trend reports citing Shana News Agency.

On May 10, 2023, Iran's Oil Minister Javad Owji and Iraqi Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation between the two countries in the fields of oil, gas and petrochemicals.

According to Owji, Iran has a contract with Iraq to supply gas to Iraq's Baghdad and Basra thermal power plants.

Reportedly, the contract regarding Iran's gas export to Iraq expires this year.

Currently, Iran's gas export to Iraq is around 30-40 million cubic meters per day.

The minister also added that according to the memorandum of understanding on cooperation between Iran and Iraq in the fields of oil, gas, and petrochemicals, the data of joint oil and gas fields and discovery operations of the two countries will be exchanged between them. In the end, there will be cooperation on the joint development and production of these fields.

In general, Iran has 28 joint oil and gas fields with neighboring countries. Of them, 18 are oil, 4 are gas, and 6 are oil-gas fields. Iran has 12 joint oil and gas fields with Iraq.
