BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 18. A recent overview of the future work at Iran-Qatar joint South Pars gas field shows that Iran is worried about the possible pressure fall-off in the next few years, Trend reports referring to an analysis of Shana News Agency.

South Pars is one of the largest gas reservoirs in the world. It holds 14.2 tcm of gas, about 8 percent of world’s total gas reserves. Iran is currently recovering 705 mcm/d of gas from its own section of the field.

The analysis said that one of the possible options that Iran is considering is the role of gas compression platforms.

"The wellhead pressure required for the transfer of 1 bcf of gas onshore is normally 120 bar. Now if this pressure falls to 100 bar it would be difficult to transfer 1 bcf of gas," said the analysis.

The analysts believe that at At 90 bar pressure, only 700 mcf could be transferred, which would also result in production drop.

"That underscores the significance of gas compression platforms which would, in the end, help prevent a drop in production," said the report.

Keeping South Pars active and working is vital for Iran, who is still suffering from the imposed sanctions. However, as Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji said recently, the country intends to develop the oil and gas sectors to the maximum under the sanctions imposed by the US and Western countries.

Owji also said that currently Iran's total production of crude oil is 154 billion barrels, and gas production - 33 trillion cubic meters. According to him, Iran presently produces over three million barrels of crude oil and more than one billion cubic meters of gas per day.

"The processing potential of Iran's oil refineries is 2.4 million barrels per day, and manufacturing volume of petrochemical products in the country is 95 million tons per year," he said.

The minister added that from March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023, oil plants, fields, and others worth more than $12 billion were commissioned in the oil and gas sector in Iran.
