BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 20. Emissions from electricity production are expected to decrease from 13,362 Mt in 2022 to 13,270 Mt in 2023, Trend reports.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects further decline in emissions to 13,120 Mt in 2024.

As such, the world experienced a 1.3 percent growth in emissions in 2022, while in 2023 and 2024 it is expected to drop by 0.7 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively.

The expected increases in emissions from power generation in China and India are projected to be counterbalanced by declines in other regions. Notably, the European Union is set to contribute significantly to this global reduction, accounting for 40% of the total decline in power generation emissions expected in 2023 and 2024, excluding China and India. The United States follows suit, with a notable surge in renewable energy deployment and a shift from coal to natural gas for power generation.

Despite the possibility of temporary upticks in emissions due to extreme weather events, unforeseen economic shocks, or shifts in government policies, the overall trend in the global power sector indicates a plateauing of emissions. Moreover, the frequency of years with declining emissions is expected to surpass those with rising emissions, suggesting a positive trajectory towards a cleaner power generation landscape.
