Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan works to build network infrastructure of Internet center

The Institute of Information Technologies (IIT) of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan conducts works to build network infrastructure of Internet-center in order to unite the Academy of Sciences' structures into common academic network under the name of ElmNet, Amiraslan Aliyev, Chief of a department of the IIT, told Trend .   

According to Aliyev, IIT specialists currently work to lay down communications lines. Six highly productive servers and telecommunications equipment have been installed at the center's building.

The initial data transmission speed at ElmNet will be 48 megabytes per second. The figure is expected to increase subsequently up to 100 megabytes per second. The Internet channel has been provided by Delta Telecom.

At present, the Academy's network stretches toward three directions, including the Institute of Geology, the Institute of Physics, and the Institute of Cybernetics. Each of the three segments unites the Academy's other nearby structures. The Academy's network currently involves 1,400 computers.

The network is designated for information exchange with foreign scientific-educational networks, accumulation of information resources, and support to information environment of divisions of the Academy of Sciences.

The project has the following three main objectives: assistance to establishment of international links available to the research and academic networks; provision of opportunity of growth of network infrastructures and information exchange; and training personnel to network operation.
