BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 7. Cargo transit through Iran for the 4th month of the current Iranian year (June 22 through July 22, 2023) increased by 33 percent compared to the same period in the last year, Iranian Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Shahriar Afandizadeh said, Trend reports.
In the fourth month, approximately 1.07 million tons of cargo passed through Iran, according to Afandizadeh.
"Meanwhile, the figure stood at 801,000 tons in the same 4th month of the previous Iranian year (June 22 through July 22, 2022)," he noted.
According to the deputy minister, freight transit in Iran may be expanded by taking advantage of the opportunities provided by trains, ports, roadways, and border terminals.
Afandizadeh stated that Iran is increasing trade with neighboring and regional countries, as well as cargo transit with members of regional organizations such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
He further stated that during the first four months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through July 22, 2023), 89 percent of freight passed through Iran by land and 11 percent by rail.
As reflected in the report of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), overall, 4.78 million tons of cargo transited through Iran for 4 months. This is a decrease of 1.74 percent compared to the same month in the last year.
