The main forces of the Kazakh internal troops were withdrawn from the city Zhanaozen after lifting the emergency situation, Kazinform reported referring to Mangistau region akimat (regional executive body).

"The main forces and resources of internal troops were withdrawn from Zhanaozen according to the Kazakh President's decree. Currently, only Zhanaozen garrison of the Interior Ministry and patrol service of Zhanaozen Interior Department are serving in the city," the akimat said on Tuesday.

Mass riots hit the Kazakh oil city of Zhanaozen in Mangystau region on Dec.16. According to the Kazakh General Attorney Office, about 14 people were killed as a result and 64 were injured by fire. Buildings and cars were burned and property of physical and legal bodies was destroyed. A state of emergency was imposed in Zhanaozen from Dec.17 to Jan 30. The riots were preceded by long strike of oil companies' employees dissatisfied with their wages.
