Kazakhstan, Afghanistan discuss military cooperation

Kazakhstan Defense Minister Adilbek Dzhaksybekov paid his first official visit to Afghanistan, the Defense Ministry said on Wednesday. During the visit Dzhaksybekov discussed military cooperation with his Afghan counterpart.

"The areas of cooperation in the military field were discussed by Dzhaksybekov and his Afghan counterpart Bismillah Khan Mohammadi," a statement said.

According to the press-service, the Kazakh military-industrial complex has the potential to repair and modernize weapons and military equipment, including means of fire control, communications, radar equipment, aerospace equipment, armored combat vehicles. There is the possibility of establishing the mutually beneficial cooperation with Afghanistan.

While informing his colleague about regular KADEX exhibition of weapons and military equipment in Kazakhstan, Kazakh Defense Minister invited Afghan specialists to take part in it in 2014.

He also invited representatives of the Afghan armed forces to attend the Steppe Eagle 2013 tactical peacekeeping exercises, to be held in August, as observers.

Currently, Kazakhstan is examining the possibility of training Afghan servicemen in military educational institutions of the country. According to the parties, this project has perspectives and could become another mechanism for cooperation in the field of specialists' training for Afghanistan.

Dzhaksybekov was also received by Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

"President Nazarbayev supports Afghanistan's active involvement in the integration processes in the region, strengthening mutual economic and humanitarian cooperation," minister said. "Our country supports Afghanistan's efforts to consolidate the Afghan society and turns the country into a stable democratic country."
