Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On ratification of the Protocol on the protection of the Caspian Sea from land-based source pollution and as a result of onshore activity to the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea", Trend reports citing the presidential press-service.
The Senate adopted the law "On ratification of the Protocol on the protection of the Caspian Sea from land-based source pollution and as a result of onshore activity to the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea", approved by the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
'The biggest hydrocarbon reserves in the Caspian Sea makes the issue of preserving the ecology and biological resources of the sea actual,' Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan Serikkali Brekeshev said at the plenary session of the Senate.
'The main goal of the Protocol is to prevent, reduce, control and eliminate pollution of the marine environment from land-based sources to achieve and maintain the ecologically healthy marine environment of the Caspian Sea," the minister said.
Brekeshev added that the Protocol is aimed at using or promoting the use of the best available technologies and environmental practice, gaining access to them and transferring them when carrying out the economic activity in the sea or in its coastal zone.
The Protocol is aimed at creating and maintaining the database on the physical, biological and chemical characteristics of the marine environment and coastal areas of the Caspian Sea, including the volume of pollutants entering the sea from land-based sources, the regular assessment of the marine environment and coastal areas of the Caspian Sea, as well as the level of sea pollution along its coastline.
