Afghanistan to build own refineries and reject Tajik refining services

Tajikistan Materials 10 January 2013 16:18 (UTC +04:00)

A refinery worth U.S. $ 700 million is to be built in northern Afghanistan in the Amu Darya basin, KyrTAG said on Thursday, citing the Afghan media and the head of the Afghanistan Investment Support Agency (AISA) Vafiulla Iftikhar.

"The plant will be capable of cleaning up to 60,000 barrels of oil per day. The project will be funded by the Afghan-American Oil Company. Presumably, the plant will contribute to Afghanistan becoming independent from the support of other countries in the field. Moreover, the project will create 36,000 jobs" Bakhtar news agency quoted Ifthikhar as saying.

The plant will be commissioned by 2016. After construction of the plant, Afghanistan may reject services provided by Tajikistan on oil refinery, a senior official said.
