Turkmen president Gurbanguli Berdimuhamedow, who is currently in Switzerland on an official visit, met with the general director of the UN specialist agency International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Khamadun Ture. The meeting took place in the UN at the Palace of Nations in Geneva.

"Turkmenistan has increased its prevalence of wired, cellular communications and Internet and the number of communication channels is growing due to the laying of high tech fibre optic communication lines," the Turkmen leader noted. He added this enables high rates of economic growth.

The general director of the International Telecommunications Union has stated that the company is ready to develop productive dialogue, stressing great potential and opportunities for effective partnership.

The ITU is coordinating the joint use of its radio spectrum, contribution to international cooperation on the distribution of orbital positions for satellites, advancing a telecommunication infrastructure in developing countries and establishing world standard.
It is also providing unhindered cooperation of wider range of communication systems from wireless broadband networks to next generation technologies, aeronautical and maritime navigation, radio astronomy, satellite-based meteorology and synchronization of fixed and mobile telephony, Internet and broadcasting technologies.

The issue on establishing a Turkmen national cosmic agency and the upcoming sending a satellite into orbit were discussed at the meeting.

The interlocutors have expressed support for the activation and extension of constructive dialogue in this field.

According to the contract, the French Thales Alenia Space company launched the construction of the first Turkmen national artificial satellite in 2011. In turn, the Great Wall Chinese industrial company has signed contract with Thales, according which China will assist Turkmenistan to launch its first communication satellite
