Iran supports Iraqi gov't, nation: ambassador to Iraq

(IRNA) - Iran's Ambassador to Iraq Hassan Kazemi Qomi here Monday said that Iranian policy has always been based on support for the democratically elected Iraqi government and its longsuffering nation.

During a meeting with Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, Kazemi Qomi submitted an invitation letter by Iranian Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel for his Iraqi counterpart to take part in the Asian Parliaments for Peace conference scheduled to be held in Tehran on November 12-14.

The ambassador said Tehran-Baghdad bilateral relations were at a suitable level and called on the two governments to pave the way for expansion of parliamentary ties by setting up specialized committees for this purpose, reports Trend.

He also stressed the need to enhance cooperation between the legal commissions of the two countries.

Al-Mashhadani, for his part, assessed as "positive" his recent visit to Iran and accepted the invitation to attend the Asian Parliaments for Peace conference.

He stressed speedy implementation of agreements already signed between the two sides and called for further Iranian participation in efforts to reconstruct Iraq.

During the meeting, Kazemi Qomi and al-Mashhadani also exchanged views on recent developments in Iraq and the current political situation in the country.
