New freeway to connect Iran with Azerbaijan(exclusive)

An Iranian transportation official has said that several domestic and international investors have expressed interest in participating in the construction of a freeway connecting the Islamic Republic to its northwestern neighbor, Azerbaijan.

Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructures Company Hossein Mirshafi told Trend that Iran is planning to strengthen its roads network to the Republic of Azerbaijan through the provinces of Ardabil and East Azerbaijan.

He further added that a freeway is currently being constructed to connect the city of Ardabil to the town of Bilasuvar (Iran) and eventually to the Republic of Azerbaijan.

In the meantime, a freeway is being constructed to connect Tabriz City to the town of Ahar which will join Bilasuvar highway, Hossein Mirshafi added.

The official expressed hope that the company would finalize investment deals for financing the projects in near future.

He also added that the new freeway is expected to contribute to the transit of cargo and transport of tourists.

The latest data released by Iran’s Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization (RMTO), shows that over 8.507 million tons of various goods were transited through Iran by 413,955 trucks in the first 11 months of the current Iranian fiscal year (March 20, Feb. 20, 2018).

About 13,161 Azerbaijani trucks transited 333,981 tons of cargo through Iran in the 11 month period. In the meantime, more than 49,000‎ Turkish trucks transited ‎964,809‎ tons of goods through Iran.

Trucks from 22 countries including Russia, Uzbekistan, Georgia and Ukraine were involved in the transit of goods via Iran in the mentioned period.

Iranian trucks in this period took the lion’s share form transiting cargo as 277,812 Iranian trucks carried 5.2 million tons of goods to foreign countries.
