Tehran, Iran, June 17
By A. Shirazi- Trend:
The deputy chairman of the Iranian Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Committee denounced the issue of Russia’s possible oil-for-goods deal with Iran, stressing that Moscow should come to realize that “Iran is not Iraq”.
“Raising the issue of oil-for-food deal with Iran (by Russia) is a reminder of Iraq’s situation in 1990 (when the UN Security Council imposed sanctions on the Arab country under Chapter VII and created the oil-for-food program),” Kamal Dehghani Firoozabadi was quoted by ILNA as saying on July 17.
“But, Iran is not in the situation of Iraq to have an oil-for-food program. The Islamic Republic of Iran has forged bilateral, political and trade ties with all member states of the UN Security Council except the US,” the lawmaker noted.
He added that Iran has a “special position” in the region.
The remarks came after Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said on July 13 that a deal under which Russia would provide goods to Iran in exchange for oil is still possible.
Russia is studying all legal issues related to the possible deal, he said.
