Increase of internet services price in Iran 'would be damaging' - researcher

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Mar.11

Trend:

Iranian parliament's approval of a 10-percent increase of tax on internet providers would be damaging, said media researcher Reza Ziaeiparvar, Trend reports via IRNA.

"The internet companies are not allowed to increase the prices for their users, but having them pay 10 percent more of taxes to the government, could led them to being broke," he said.

"So the company should either reduce internet speed or increase the price, and both options would be damaging to people," he believes.

Meanwhile, Iran's parliament has allocated tax revenues from the internet providers to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) for monitoring cyber space content.

"Monitoring cyber space content by the IRIB is extrajudicial since the parliament has not mentioned monitoring the right on cyber space content for IRIB in any bill and the MPs should set a law for this, instead of allocating the budget to the IRIB and Iranian Audiovisual Media Regulatory Authority (SATRA)," he said.

"The parliament should review the functioning process and responsibilities of SATRA, and immediately approve a law for how to manage SATRA and then allocate the budget to it," he said.

"The budget plan for the new Iranian year (starts March 21,2021) does not relate to monitoring cyber space content and such issues require separate regulation," he said.
