Iran reduces reliance on auto parts import

TEHRAN, Iran, July 6

Trend:

Iran's auto industry reliance on import of auto parts has declined in recent years by $2.5 billion, which is due to increase of domestic production, said secretary of Iranian Auto Part Manufacturers Association Arash Mohebi-Nejad, Trend reports via IRNA.

"The decline of import was partly due to boost of domestic production, which was achieved by cooperation of auto part makers and auto manufacturers. The other reasons were the continuous sanctions against Iran's auto industry and shortage of foreign currency," he said.

"The officials should offer more support domestic production," Mohebi-Nejad said.

He went on to add that there's a shortage of high-tech auto parts, mostly microchips in Iran, which is due to global crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic as well.

"Also, some of the problems are of internal nature, due to lack of financial support and the debt of domestic automakers to auto part makers," said Mohebi-Nejad.
