Iran waits for Russian word on missile contract: Iranian minister
Iran has not received official statements from Russia on the breaking of an agreement to transfer S300 missile defense systems to Tehran, Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said today. He was commenting on information about Russia's refusal to provide the missiles, IRNA reported.
"Russia informed us that in the course of the missile defense system transfer delays will occur due ot technical problems. So far, Iran has not received from Russia a formal warning that the missile defense systems will not be handed over," he said.
According to Vahidi, Iran appealed to Russia to expedite the resolution of technical problems to transfer the S300 missile defense systems and complete the transfer.
"We hope Russia will soon transfer the missile defense systems," he said.
Russia and Iran signed an agreement worth $ 1 billion to transfer S300 anti-missile systems two years ago. Concerned about the agreement and Iran's nuclear program, the U.S. and Israel demanded that Moscow abandon plans to sell the system to Tehran.
According to Russian media, Russia opted against selling the systems to Tehran.
