At least eight killed in Iraq attacks

At least eight people, including two Iraqi soldiers, were killed and 16 injured Saturday in various attacks around Iraq, according to security sources, dpa reported.

Two soldiers were killed and 14 others were injured when a bomb exploded, targeting their army checkpoint in the Abu Ghraib area in western Baghdad.

In the northern city of Mosul, three women and one man, from the same family, were killed when gunmen attacked their home in the Bab al-Beid district, in the centre of the city.

A gunman was killed and another injured when a bomb they were trying to plant in western Mosul went off.

A child was injured when a bomb exploded in a separate attack.

Also in Mosul, located some 400 kilometres north of the city, the body of a woman was found in what police sources suggested could be a suicide.

Mosul and its surrounding towns are among Iraq's most ethnically diverse and dangerous. Insurgents continue to mount near-daily attacks in the area, even as police claim that security sweeps have netted hundreds of detainees.

The violence comes as nearly 400,000 secret US military documents were released Friday, outlining abuse of Iraqi prisoners and suggesting strong Iranian influence in Iraq. Lawmakers in Iraq said they expect security to be further compromised due to the leaks that point to both US and Iraqi abuse of power.

Iraqi civilians and security forces have increasingly been coming under attack from insurgents in recent months, with less than 50,000 United States troops now stationed in the country - their lowest level since the 2003 invasion.
