Clashes as Jordan announces election results

Clashes erupted on Thursday in Jordan between supporters of rival parliamentary candidates as officials announced partial election results, dpa reported.

Angry supporters also stormed government buildings in several cities after the independent election commission named the winners of 123 of 150 seats in the lower house.

Officials said 56.7 per cent of 2.2 million eligible voters cast their ballots in the polls held Wednesday.

The focal point of the violence was in the city of Maan, some 200 kilometres south of the Jordanian capital Amman, where dozens of residents stormed government buildings, schools and banks in protest at the results.

Witnesses said rioters accused authorities of election fraud and chanted: "The people want to topple the regime."

Supporters of rival candidates in the northern city of Mafraq blocked roads with burning tyres after several news websites carried unofficial results.

Residents also attacked several schools in the port city of Aqaba to protest delays in releasing the final results, said witnesses.

The chairman of the commission, Abdul Illah Khatib, urged patience, saying that the delay was because of the sheer number of party lists.

Some 61 lists fielded more than 600 candidates in the election, which was boycotted by the Muslim Brotherhood, Jordan's largest political movement.

Later Thursday, officials expect to announce results for the final 27 seats, which will be allocated to party lists under a quota system.

Preliminary results indicate that tribal leaders and conservative regime loyalists dominated the elections.

The Muslim Brotherhood withdrew from the polls to protest an electoral law that critics claim favours regime loyalists.

In a report on Wednesday, the group claimed the polls were marred by widespread irregularities, accusing the authorities of inflating turnout.
