A senior Palestinian official announced on Wednesday that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will hold a meeting with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York next week, Xinhua reports.
Reyad Mansour, the permanent representative of Palestine in the United Nations (UN), told Voice of Palestine Radio that Abbas will fly to the UN on Tuesday for chairing the Group of 77 (G77) and China.
The G77 is a large coalition of developing countries at the UN, designed to promote its members' collective economic interests and create an enhanced joint negotiating capacity. Egypt is the chairman of the group in 2018.
Mansour said that Abbas will discuss with Guterres several issues, mainly the implementation of the UN Security Council's Resolution 2334 which considered the Israeli settlement activities in the Palestinian territories "illegal."
The Palestinian diplomat announced that Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri, Guterres and senior UN officials will attend the ceremony of moving the chair of the G77 and China from Egypt to Palestine.
Meanwhile, Abdul Rahim al-Farra, the ambassador of the state of Palestine to the European Union (EU), told Voice of Palestine Radio that several meetings are held in both Cairo and Brussels to prepare for the EU-Arab Summit scheduled in Cairo on Jan. 24.
Al-Farra expected that the summit's final statement will be committed to the principle of the two-state solution with East Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Palestine and rejecting "illegal Israeli settlement."
Earlier on Wednesday, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Israel of burying any attempt to revive the stalled Middle East Peace Process.
The ministry said in a statement that "Israel is blocking any chance for making peace by increasing settlement activities, mainly building up more settlements and increasing the number of settlers in the occupied West Bank."
