Rescue teams on Monday found the bodies of three people - including a 10-year-old girl - after finding another body a day earlier.

The Fire Department said heavy rain Sunday in the town of Teresopolis - less than 100 kilometres from Rio de Janeiro - caused a wave to wash down the side of a mountain, dragging rocks and tree branches, and surprising some 50 people swimming by a waterfall downstream.

The authorities were still searching Monday for four other people who had been dragged into the Soberbo river.

Scores of people managed to escape from the site, but at least eight were dragged into the river.
