Air force jets bombed what they called a
rebel combat and logistics facility in northern Sri Lanka, as government troops
continued their offensive to recapture rebel-held areas, military officials
said, according to dpa.
The target was taken in Venavil, of the Mullaitivu district, 360 kilometres north-east of the country on Sunday morning.
Air Force spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said Tamil rebels used
the site to convert, maintain and service their combat vehicles.
The facility also held a large fuel dump and was believed to be a prime
logistical supply supply camp of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE),
military officials said.
"According to latest information received, the LTTE site is still burning
following a series of explosions that were reported immediately after the air
raid this morning", the spokesman said.
More than 5,000 rebels, soldiers and civilians have been killed
since a ceasefire ended three years ago without a political solution to the
25-year-old conflict, which has claimed over 76,000 lives.
