Afghan journalist released from jail

Afghan journalist Pervez Kambakhsh, sentenced to 20-year imprisonment on charge of involvement in blasphemy has been set free, a private television channel reported Tuesday.

"In line with President Hamid Karzai's order Kambash was released," Tolo aired in its bulletin, Xinhua reported.

The young journalist was sentenced to 20 years in jail for downloading, reprinting and distributing a blasphemy article to the people two years ago.

His arrest triggered outcry among journalist communities and they described it as against freedom of press and demanding his early release.

However, Tolo television did not say the exact date of kambakhsh's release.

Meantime, local press has reported that Kambakhsh was secretly freed two weeks ago and has fled the country for fear of reprisal.
