A South Korean container ship is believed to have been hijacked by Somali pirates, South Korea's foreign ministry said Thursday, Xinhua reported.

"We are assuming that (the ship) has been hijacked," foreign ministry spokesman Cho Byung-jae told reporters in a press briefing, adding a South Korean warship is sailing towards the container vessel.

Cho declined to elaborate on South Korea's plan to secure the release of the 75,000-ton Hanjin Tianjin, which reportedly carried 14 South Korean sailors and six Indonesians, citing operational matters.

Hanjin Shipping, owner of the vessel, said earlier in the day that they lost contact with the ship at 5:15 a.m. local time after sailors reported an emergency situation in waters off the Somali coast.
