Former Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald, has died in Dublin after a short illness, Irish national broadcaster RTE announced Thursday.
Fitzgerald, who was 85, served twice as prime minister (Taoiseach) between 1981 and 1987 at the head of Fine Gael/Labour coalition governments, DPA reported.
FitzGerald's greatest achievement was the signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement in 1985, which gave the Irish government a role in Northern Ireland and paved the way for the Good Friday Peace Agreement in 1998.
