Prominent Chinese dissident Hu Jia was released from prison early Sunday after serving more than three years for subversion, according to his wife, dpa reported.

Hu, 37, was active in human rights issues before he was imprisoned in 2008 for "inciting subversion of state power."

"Hu Jia came home at 2:30 am. Safe, very happy. He needs time to recuperate. Thank you, everyone," Zeng Jinyan said on her Twitter account.

Hu's advocacy for the rights of people living with HIV in China drew international attention including the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 2008.
