President: Drug abuse in Turkmenistan should be completely eradicated

By Huseyn Hasanov - Trend: President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at the National Security Council's meeting that there is a need to completely eradicate drug abuse in the country, Turkmen government's report said on November 8.

"We have to put a reliable barrier to drug smuggling and completely eradicate drug addiction, which causes great damage to modern society," Berdimuhamedov said.

The Turkmen president urged to intensify joint efforts of civil society organizations, law enforcement authorities and healthcare institutions to detect and treat drug addicts, organize broad educational activities through mass campaigns and all kinds of events, especially among the youth.

Head of the State Service of Turkmenistan for Security of Healthy Society, Atadurdy Osmanov informed the State Security Council members about the implementation of earlier given instructions on maintaining uncompromising struggle against the illegal distribution and use of drugs, the message said.

Turkmenistan participates in three international conventions on combating illegal narcotics and psychotropic substance trafficking, adopted by the UN in 1961, 1971 and 1988.
