As a result of operative investigative measures, officers of the Azerbaijani police and public prosecution bodies have arrested one more person involved in the armed incident that took place on Dec.11 in the city of Sumgait, according to the message of the Azerbaijani Interior Ministry published on Dec.23.

The detainee is a resident of the city Jalal Mikayilov. A search of his apartment revealed a hunting rifle, one grenade, 48 cartridges for a machine gun, 70 banned items relating to religious literature, 12 discs, one floppy disk and three notebooks with religious texts, all of which were confiscated.

A conflict broke out between a group belonging to the Khawarij and Salafi extremist movements on Dec. 11 at about 20:30 in a tearoom located in the 10th district of Sumgait city. Residents Anar Rahimov and Elmar Mammadli were stabbed during the incident and the residents of the Teze Jorat settlement Elshan Musayev and Elnur Nazaraliyev received shrapnel wounds.

A search was conducted at the apartment of Anar Rahimov, who was stabbed during the incident. A search of his apartment revealed an F-1 grenade, bayonet, 30 cartridges, a cartridge clip, a laptop and banned religious literature.

A search in the apartment of Elnur Nazaraliyev, who received shrapnel wounds, revealed one sawn-off hunting rifle, one bayonet, 26 audio CDs and 31 various calibre cartridges. During the searches in an apartment rented in Sumgait by Guba district resident Anar Mirzayev, 104 grams of hashish, 16 audio CDs of a propagandistic character and banned religious literature were also seized. A search in the apartment of Sumgait resident Vugar Khalilov revealed a grenade, 31 cartridges for a sub machine gun and one bayonet.

Over 15 people have been detained regarding this incident.

The city of Sumgait is located in the east of Azerbaijan, 30 kilometres from Baku.
