The United States Thursday rejected suggestions that security at its Benghazi, Libya, diplomatic mission was not sufficient when the compound was attacked on Tuesday on the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, DPA reported.

"As we did with all of our missions overseas in advance of the September 11 anniversary, and as we do every year, we did evaluate the threat stream and we did determine that the security at Benghazi was appropriate for what we knew," US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Thursday.

The outer perimeter of the consulate was guarded by a local Libyan guard force, Nuland said, "and then a robust American security presence inside the compound." Nuland said there were no US Marines stationed at the Benghazi mission, which was not unusual.
