Turkmen President to partake in forum for Saving Aral in Almaty

Today, Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdymuhamedov partakes in a summit of heads of the International Fund for Saving Aral (IFSA) in Almaty, an official Turkmen source reported.

The International Fund for Saving Aral Sea (IFAS) was founded on Jan. 4, 1993 upon the decision of the Central Asian states in an effort to finance joint actions and programs to save the Aral Sea and improve ecological situation of the basin. The IFAS was launched by Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Kazakhstan was elected chair of the fund for 2009-2011.

Aral problem has affected the north of Turkmenistan. Dashoguz region suffered the negative effects of environmental catastrophe, there emerged acute problems of the population with clean drinking water and anti-salinization of arable land.

The upcoming forum should focus in the search for sustainable water management in Central Asia. Particular emphasis will be placed on strengthening cooperation with major international organizations, financial institutions and donors

Berdymuhamedov will hold bilateral meetings on the highest level.
