Traffic accidents in Georgia leave 509 dead in 2010

Last year, 2,516 traffic accidents took place in Georgia. Some 509 resulted in deaths, and 5,615 people received injuries of varying severity.
As the Georgian Interior Ministry told Trend, 19 children under the age of 16 were killed and 397 were injured in the accidents. The number of accidents compared to 2009 increased by 6.6 percent.
During the reporting period, 196 cases of drunk driving were recorded. As a result, 30 people died and 319 were injured. Due to driving over the speed limit, 1,200 accidents took place. Some 174 resulted in deaths, while 1,751 people were injured.
The number of injured pedestrians in accidents last year reached 913, with 107 killed.
