Spain and Italy went to a penalty shootout in their Euro 2008 quarter-final on Sunday with the score at 0-0 after 120 minutes of stalemate between the two Latin rivals.
Spain had most of the play and made a few chances against the packed Italian defence, midfielder David Silva almost breaking the deadlock with a ball which whistled past the post early in the first period of extra time.
The Spaniards had also come closest in normal time when Italian keeper Gianluigi Buffon fumbled a shot from Marcos Senna on to the post in the 81st minute.
The winner of the shootout will meet Russia in the semi-finals in Vienna on Thursday, Reuters reported.
